Department of Medical Electronic Engineering
 

Founded in 1986, the Department of Medical Electronic Engineering is committed to educating and training professionals in biomedical engineering. In addition to providing undergraduate and graduate programs for bachelor and master's degrees in biomedical engineering, it contributes greatly to doctoral and post-doctoral programs of the school. The research at the department is mainly carried out in two labs: Biomedical Signal Acquisition and Processing lab and Medical Imaging Lab, which are both part of a ministerial key lab titled medical engineering. To keep the research in a leading position, the department has paid great attention to international collaboration and set up a long-term cooperation with Demontford University of UK and Tel-Aviv University of Israel.

Research Areas:

1. Electrical impedance imaging and monitoring

The department has undertaken more than 15 research projects in this area, including one collaborative project sponsored by Sino-Israeli Science and Strategy Research Foundation, and projects funded by National Key Technologies R&D five-year Program, by National Natural Science Foundation of China, and by research foundation at ministerial and provincial level. The research on bio-electrical impedance tomography was appraised by Chinese Stereology Society as one of the Top Ten Asian CT Technology Progress in 1999.

2. Bio-tissue electrical impedance spectrum measurement

   The aim of this research is to provide the base for bio-tissue electrical impedance imaging. In this field, our works focus on the impedance spectrum measurement of different type of tissue and organs, such as liver, lung and bone. This study is currently funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China.

3. Biomedical signal acquisition and processing

Our emphasis is on the detection and analysis of weak electro-cardiac signals and has won a national third-prize for Science and Technology Progress in China, and 12 Awards for Science and Technology Progress at provincial and ministerial level (3 second-prizes and 9 third-prizes, respectively).

The department has conferred 23 master's degrees and 18 doctoral degrees since its establishment. Currently there are 10 graduate students chasing their degrees in Biomedical Engineering (7 out of 10 for doctoral degree).

Laboratory of Bio-signal Acquisition and Processing

The Laboratory of Bio-signal Acquisition and Processing is located on the fourth floor of Biomedical Engineering Building in the university. It's equipped with many state of the art experimental instrument including Solartron 1255B impedance analyzer, digital storage oscilloscope and ultrasound imaging components.

1. Collaboration with Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering,  Tel-Aviv University, Israel, on electrical impedance tomography.

DONG, Xiu-Zhen

Professor, Department of Medical Electronic Engineering, School of Biomedical Engineering.

Educational Background:

B.S. Eng. 1968, Ha'erbin Institute of Military Engineering, department of aviation engineering, majoring in automatic control.

 Academic Appointments:

She entered the Fourth Military Medical University in 1980, and had been instructor and assistant professor with the Central Lab in the Division of Training. She moved to the Department of Medical Electronic Engineering in 1986 and had been assistant professor, associate professor, professor, vice director and director of the department, and dean of School of Biomedical Engineering.

He received the B.S., M.S, and Ph.D. degrees in the School of Biomedical Engineering, in the Fourth Military Medical University in 1993, 1996 and 1999, respectively.

He entered the Fourth Military Medical University in 1989, and had been instructor and assistant professor in the Department of Medical Electronic Engineering. Now he is the director of the Department of Medical Electronic Engineering.

You Fu-Sheng

Associate Professor, Department of Medical Electronic Engineering, School of Biomedical Engineering.

Educational Background:

He received the B.S., M.S, and Ph.D. degrees in the School of Biomedical Engineering, in the Fourth Military Medical University in 1990, 1998 and 2004, respectively.

Academic Appointments:

In 1990, He worked as an assistant engineer in the Research center of High Altitude Disease, Lhasa, Tibet. He entered the Fourth Military Medical University in 1999, and had been instructor and assistant professor in the Department of Medical Electronic Engineering. From 2004 to 2008, he had been vice director of the department. Now he is the vice dean of School of Biomedical Engineering.
