Brief Introduction of Department of Continuing Education

As a pioneer among Chinese military academies in continuing adult higher education, the Fourth Military Medical University has been extending learning opportunities beyond its classrooms. The university set up the Office of Continuing Education early in 1992. In 1995, the Section of Correspondence Education was established. In 1999, the Department of Continuing Education was officially established and was listed in the army organization structure. In 2007, School of Continuing Education, attached to the Division of Training of the University, was established. The set-up of School of Continuing Education is a milestone in the transition of the university's traditional educational mode to an educational mode of coordinated development that integrates the undergraduate and postgraduate education with the continuing adult higher education.

With the 30-year rapid development, our university has achieved a great deal in the continuing education. The programs have been developed from the teacher-training programs at the beginning of reform and open-up to the comprehensive on-post training programs in a variety of specialties and in high levels with 80,000 servicemen having been trained. Recently over 30 on-post training programs are held annually with the number of trainees reaching up to1,500. In recent two years, the post-promotion programs for colonels of the General Logistics Department have been sponsored, which has been highly praised by the leaders of the General Logistics Department as a brand-new innovation in the on-post training.

Since 1984, more than 12,000 medical students have been trained through the correspondence education for the army with the annual enrollment of 1,800 in 7 specialties at two levels. The correspondence education plays an important role in the development of the military medicine.

The School of Continuing Education shares the abundant resources of instructors in the University, most of whom are associate or full professors rich in teaching experience. In addition, it has invited many senior and celebrated experts and professors from outside campus as its part-time instructors.

The Building of Continuing Education with the floor space of 40,000 square meters is under construction and the development of the continuing education of our university will be definitely facilitated after its construction next year.

Based on the theory of Den Xiaoping, the concept of scientific development and the thoughts of "three represents", the School of Continual Education of the Fourth Military Medical University will continuously carry out the strategy of setting up a life-long learning system, following the principle of balanced development of scale, quality and benefits, drawing upon the university's faculty expertise, improving teaching facilities, state-of-the-art communication and computer network, actively utilizing modern educational technologies and exploring for a new mode of electronic and digitalized network of instruction, administration and quality control as well.
