
Founded in 1992, the School of Public Health and Military Preventive Medicine of the Fourth Military Medical University is now being a school of public health with comprehensive disciplines and advanced research facilities. The school consists of Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Department of Epidemiology, Department of Radiation Medicine, Department of Toxicology, Department of Health Statistics, and Department of Physical education, etc. The School encompasses about 5260 square meters of lab, teaching, and office space.
The School has 1 national key discipline of military preventive medicine and 1 key discipline sponsored by "211 Project". It has a faculty of more than 100 high-caliber researchers, including 11 professors and 33 associate professors, of whom 8 are instructors for Ph.D. students and 16 for master students. All the researchers in the faculty have master's degree and about ninety percent of them have doctor's degree. The School was ratified by the State Council as one of the first disciplines conferring doctoral and master's degree of Public Health and Preventative Medicine and has a post-doctoral research station of this specialty. The seven disciplines in the School have the capacity to recruit 30-40 candidates of master's degree and 20-30 of doctor's degree each year. In recent years, 528 professionals of health statistics and nutrition and food hygiene, 139 Ph.D. and 146 M.S. have graduated from the School. Additionally, the School has carried out long-term research cooperation and personnel training with many famous international universities, such as New York University, Purdue University, University of California (Los Angeles), Kyoto University, etc. More than 40 researchers in the staff have experiences of overseas training.
The School is the chairman of Chinese Health Information Standardization Society, the vice-chairman of Chinese Society of Clinical Epidemiology and the chairman of the Shaanxi Committees of Environmental Health, Health Statistics, Epidemiology and Clinical Epidemiology. At the present, the research fields of the School include radiation biology, preventative medicine in special environment, molecular toxicology and free radical medicine, epidemiological research of severe infectious diseases and statistical methods of medicine and health information standards.
